Those who are already feeling the effects of the soaring pollen count have been advised to switch to 1 Day Acuvue moist contact lenses.
Kentucky-based ocular expert Doctor Paul Karpecki suggested people who currently wear monthly contact lenses may benefit from the change.
He noted that putting a new lens in every day can prevent the build up of allergens in the eye and the 1-Day Acuvue Moist brand will help maintain moisture.
Doctor Karpecki also advised hay fever sufferers to avoid taking tablets, as these often speed up the effects of dryness in the eyes.
If such medication is to be taken, it is perhaps best done at night, when the "drying effect is not as dramatic".
The expert also indicated that taking regular showers in the summer with the heating fan off can help reduce the amount of pollen or dust on the body.
According to the manufacturer, 1 Day Acuvue moist contact lenses are particularly useful in the hotter months, as they offer high levels of ultra violet protection.
