Members of the British Contact Lens Association will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the soft contact lens when they attend the Pioneers Conference on November 23rd.

We now have all kinds of funky, crazy contact lenses but until Professor Otto Wichterle invented the soft contact lens 50 years ago only the hard variety were available.

The opening session of the conference will be dedicated to the innovative invention which has led to further advances in contact lens technology.

Historians Tim Bowden and Andrew Gasson's session entitled 'Soft contact lenses: the first 50 years' will look back at the changes which have occurred.

Soft contact lenses have grown hugely in popularity due to the immediate comfort they offer in comparison with hard lenses which require a period of adaptation.

Nigel Burnett Hodd, honorary Pioneers Conference organiser, said: "Today we have some of the most imaginative lenses ever, yet so many are based on those original pioneering days."
