Indian eyewear market buoyed by 'fashionable' contact lenses

The Indian eyewear market is likely to reach Rs 430 billion (£5.3 billion) by 2015, thanks partly to continued demand for fashionable, funky contact lenses.

With contact lenses now being seen as more of a fashion item, The Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) has suggested that the country's eyewear market will only continue to grow.

Assocham, in its Indian Optical Sector report, adds that products such as lens cleaning solutions, spectacle lenses, frames and sunglasses will all contribute to the growth of the market.

According to My Iris, D.S. Rawat, secretary general at Assocham said when releasing the report: "Ever-changing consumer preferences, rising per-capita income, growing awareness amid consumers and with eyewear becoming more of a fashion accessory and a lifestyle product, the optical products industry in India is likely to see robust growth."

Currently, the prescription eyewear market in India is estimated at about Rs 85billion.
