Contact lens wearers are reminded that they are important for driving.

Contact lens and glasses wearers are being reminded to wear their corrective eyewear when driving, after research found that many don't.

The results from the Ultralase survey showed that a third of people who wear lenses or glasses drive without them at least twice a week.

Only intending to drive for a short distance, forgetting and wanting to wear sunglasses were all reasons for getting behind the wheel without them.

Nine of ten respondents said they backed calls for compulsory eye tests to be carried out on all drivers.

Tony Veverka, chief executive of Ultralase, said: "This relaxed attitude shows not only in the risks that motorists are taking but through the lack of standard testing for licence holders too."

Wearing contact lenses is better than glasses for avoiding the problem of sunglasses during the summer as the two forms of eyewear can be more easily combined.
